He's Not A Vegetable, He's Mr. Celery

If I were to say sports mascots, names of some of the greats like The Phillie Phanatic, The San Diego Chicken, Wally the Green Monster, and Youppi may come to mind. But that is a disservice to perhaps the greatest mascot in sprts, Mr. Celery. Mr. Celery is a mascot for the Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Though he may be regulated to the minors, he provides major league entertainment.

Mr Celery's job is to celebrate each time the Blue Rocks score a run and to mosh with the fans sitting around home plate. But what does a stalk of Celery have to do with a team called the Blue Rocks, the city of Wilmington, or even baseball for that matter? Absolutely nothing. That is what makes Mr. Celery the envy of mascots the world over, he is so cool he does not have to make sense, and he's entertaining too.

So next time your driving on I 95 through Wilmington Delaware, and you see the lights on in the stadium, take a detour. Get off the MLK exit, and enjoy the cheap ticket prices, the reasonable food prices, the good selection of beer and catch a game and allow Mr. Celery to entertain you, trust me you won't regret it.
